All Visitors to Puerto Vallarta should know the basic and most
important laws in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco and Riviera Nayarit.
Arriving at the Local Airport you will be asked to answer how
many days you are planning to stay visiting and if there’s any
other specific business you will be doing in your visit.
Bringing any kind of Drugs, Weapons or Fruits and vegetables
is forbidden, mainly to avoid plagues that can infect local
vegetations and crops.
Every visitor must have a valid Passport where your Visa
Stamp will be posted.
- Tourist Visa: Foreigners must have a valid tourist card or a
resident visa to be in Mexico. Overstaying your visa is illegal,
Tourist Visiting by air are not required to Tramit a (FMMD) The
Digital Multiple Migratory Form, is a migratory document that
accredits the regular situation in the conditions of stay of a Visitor
without Permission to Carry out Unpaid Activities, under the
modalities of Tourism, Business or Others; Visitor with Permit to
Perform Paid Activities and; Visitor for Humanitarian Reasons. - Vehicle Insurance: If you are buying a car, vehicle insurance with
liability coverage is mandatory. It’s advisable to purchase a policy
that includes legal representation and the cost of a bail bond, all
Car rental businesses in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit
include an Insurance Policy with your rental agreement. - Public Behavior: Being drunk and disorderly in public is illegal,
even in Mexico. Drunk driving is a serious crime, Mexicans and
foreigners do not receive any special privileges regarding
drinking and driving.
- Drug Laws: Possession and trafficking of any illegal drug is a
federal offense. To avoid issues with controlled medications,
carry a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s note. - Weapons: Guns and weapons are illegal in Mexico. It’s also
advisable to leave your pocketknife at home.
- Fishing Licenses: Any boat carrying fishing gear in Mexican
waters must hold a valid fishing license for each person on
board, regardless of age and whether they are fishing or not,
average price is 127 pesos per person, however these prices
could change at any time . A fishing license is not required when
fishing from land or the beach.
- Political Activity: Foreigners should not get involved in political
activities, including demonstrations or protests. Engaging in such
activities may result in being asked to leave the country. - Foreign visitors traveling to the popular beach destination of
Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific Coast will soon be required to
pay a tourist fee under a controversial new law recently approved
by Jalisco’s Congress, this charge amount has not been released
yet by July 2025.
